Why Should We Promote Organic Fertilizer Application?

Applying organic fertilizer is the important foundation for sustainable agricultural development. A large amount of researches and practices say that organic fertilizer has the following characteristics and functions.


1) Comprehensive nutrients & lasting fertilizer efficiency: organic fertilizer does not only contain a large number of necessary nutrients for plants, trace elements, but also is rich in organic nutrients ( e.g. humic acid, vitamins, auxin, antibiotics), and some small molecule compounds with organic nitrogen and phosphorus. Therefore, organic fertilizer is the most comprehensive fertilizer. In addition, the application of organic fertilizer to allow a wide range of changes. In general, it will not endanger the growth of crops. The application of organic fertilizer not only increased the yield of seasoning crops, but the general effect can still be effective in some years later.


2) Improving soil physical and chemical properties and improving soil fertility: Organic fertilizer contains a large amount of organic matter and the general content of is about 200 grams /kg. Organic matter is an important material basis for soil fertility. The main body of soil organic matter is humus, accounting for 50% -65% of the total amount of soil organic matter. Humus is a complex organic colloid that can regulate and buffer the pH of the soil; increase the soil cation exchange capacity, and improve soil fertility;


The increase of soil organic matter content is conducive to the formation of good soil structure, especially the increase of water-stable aggregate structure, so as to improve the soil tightness, aeration, water retention and thermal status.


3) Promoting the microbial activities in soil: soil microorganism plays an important role in the process of organic matter transformation, and it is one of the important signs to measure the level of soil fertility. For example, it is related to the soil mineralization of organic matter, the effective process of organic nitrogen and phosphorus in soil and the biological nitrogen fixation of leguminous plants. Therefore, on the one hand, the application of organic fertilizers can increase the quantity and population of soil beneficial microorganisms; on the other hand, it can provide good environmental conditions for soil microbial activities, significantly enhancing soil microbial activity.



4) Maintenance and promotion of soil’s nutrient balance: nutrients ingested by plants from the soil can be returned to the soil by applying organic fertilizers and the form of plant residues. The degree of regression depends mainly on whether the organic manure is fully accumulated and the reasonable accumulative application . Only in the agricultural production to grasp this balance, in combination with the application of chemical fertilizers, the soil fertility can be spiraled. Therefore, the application of organic fertilizer is an important measure of soil fertility.


5) Reducing the cost of fertilizer input: applying organic fertilizer can not only improve soil fertility, increase soil nutrients, but also can increase the utilization rate of fertilizers, reduce the amount of fertilizer application, thus reducing the cost of agricultural inputs.


The characteristics and functions of organic fertilizer above determine its irreplaceable significant role in modern sustainable agriculture.
