Carbon is the basic energy source of microorganisms in composting, it is also the basic raw material to form the microbial cells. The microorganisms in composting can decompose carbon-containing organic matter, meanwhile, it can use some of nitrogen elements to build their own cell bodies. Nitrogen is also the main ingredient to form the cells protein, nucleic acid and all kinds of enzymes. Generally, microorganisms need to absorb 1g nitrogen to help to consume 25g organic carbon, so the appropriate carbon and nitrogen ratio for microbial decomposition of organic matter is 25:1. If C/N is too high, the needed nitrogen of microbial growth and reproduction may be limited, microbial growth and reproduction speed is low, the decomposition of organic matter is slow, fermentation time is long, the coefficient of humification is low also. All these condition may cause a bad fermentation. If the C/N is too low, the required energy of microbial growth and reproduction are limited, fermentation temperature rise slowly, it may cause excessive nitrogen content and are released under the form of ammonia. So there will be a big loss of organic nitrogen and will also send out foul smelling. Therefore, the regulation of the carbon and nitrogen ratio in composting materials is effective solution to accelerate organic fertilizer maturation.
